Legislative Issues
Our vast service system is a direct consequence of state and federal legislation which has been enacted over the past forty years. That system must change with changing times. Thus, existing laws must be amended and new laws enacted.
Federal laws like the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act or laws governing the nation's Medicaid system must be constantly reauthorized and refined. Similarly constant attention must be directed at state budget laws; laws governing a vast array of state programs; and, laws protecting civil rights. Critically, there are always attempts by interest groups and lawmakers to enact legislation which is harmful or not in the best interest of the individuals and families we serve. NYSARC and all advocates must be ever vigilant to detect and deter such attempts.
