Changes in public policy, shifting public attitudes, and current events can have a special and immediate impact on people who have developmental disabilities and their families. State and federal budget priorities, emerging health care trends, criminal justice, the economy and the nation's public education system shape countless services and profoundly influence the development of an inclusive society.
Individuals with developmental disabilities comprise of a minority against which much discrimination has been lodged. People who have intellectual and other developmental disabilities and those who advocate for them must pay special attention to news and currents trends. Therefore, a central task for NYSARC, Inc. is to monitor these events, analyze their impact and mobilize appropriate responses to key officials, NYSARC chapters, other similar organizations and the public at large.
